Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION: Which operating systems will your visual themes work with? ANSWER: The visual themes available on this site will operate only with Windows XP Professional/Media/Home Editions and Windows 2003. Themes for Windows Vista are specifically listed as such and will only operate under Stardock's Windowblinds 6.0 or higher. QUESTION: Is there any additional software required to use your themes? ANSWER: Yes, I recommend StyleXP from the great folks at TGTSoft be used to apply all my visual themes after installation. WindowBlinds skins require the WindowBlinds software from StarDock to be applied. QUESTION: How do I install your themes? ANSWER: Some of the visual themes on this site are self-installing, just run the executable file and follow the installation instructions. At the completion of the installation, the Display Properties window or StyleXP will launch automatically. Just click 'OK' to apply the theme, or if using StyleXP just close the window and run StyleXP to install. Compressed .ZIP file downloads should also contain installation instructions. In any case, you must have third-party software installed to run visual themes that do not come with the operating system you are using. Windowblinds themes may be added within Windowblinds itself. QUESTION: I have installed the theme, but the correct font(s) do not display, did I do something wrong? ANSWER: Not at all! You just need to install any font(s) that came with the theme. To install, navigate in explorer to 'C:/Windows/Resources/Themes/THEMENAME/Font' and also open up your Font Manager window from inside Control Panel. Left click and drag the new font(s)into the Font Manager window to install. Reload the visual theme, the font(s) should now be correct. QUESTION: How do I get all of the icons shown in your various screenshots to apply? ANSWER: Generally the only icons that apply with the theme are the My Computer, My Documents, My Network and Recycle BIN icons. To install any other icons you will need a third-party program such as IconPackager from StarDock or the new StyleXP from the TGTSoft web site. QUESTION: What is the calendar program shown in a lot of your screenshots? ANSWER: The program is called Rainlendar and can be found over at Rainy's place. You can also find plenty of skins for the program over at DeviantArt's web site. QUESTION: You have a clock/system statistics program shown on your desktop in screenshots like those of Chivalry and ForeverBlue, how do I get it? ANSWER: The program is called SysMetrix and can be found at Xymantix's web site, with lots of skins for the program at winCustomize.com's web site. QUESTION: How can I turn off some or all of the icons on my desktop? ANSWER: To turn off icons selectively, including the Recycle BIN icon, you will require one of the PowerToy's titled 'TweakUI'. You can download it directly from Microsoft's web site, (be sure to download the correct version). Also, another method of turning off all icons on the desktop at once is to right click on the desktop, select 'Arrange Icons By', and uncheck 'Show Desktop Icons'. Repeating the process again will allow you to turn them back on if desired. QUESTION: What is the sidebar program with the analog clock, newsroom, media player, etc., pictured in some of your newer themes like RedDragon and StrangeWorld? ANSWER: It's a program called Desktop Sidebar, and you can download it from the Desktop Sidebar web site. It is definitely one great program, with tons of great features! QUESTION: How do I get that neat looking toolbar with all the icons at the top of my screen like in some of your screenshots? ANSWER:
1.) Create a new folder on your hard drive titled "My Toolbar" which will be used to house your icons. 2.) Unlock the taskbar, (right click on it and uncheck 'Lock the Taskbar'). 3.) Create a new toolbar on the main taskbar utilizing the folder you created in Step 1 above. 4.) Add any icons/shortcuts that you wish to use to the toolbar by either dragging them inside the toolbar, or placing them within the 'My Toolbar' folder on your hard drive. 5.) Left click inside the toolbar area, (not on an icon), and hold the button down while dragging the toolbar out onto the desktop and to the top of the screen and let go of the button. 6.) Right click on the toolbar, (not on an icon), and using the right click context menu, turn off the toolbar title text and set the icon view to large. 7.) You should set your icon size via Display Properties - Appearance - Advanced to 48 or 64, (your personal preference), for the full effect. ... more to come ...
